Renwick Smallpox Hospital, a derelict building on Roosevelt Island's Southpoint. This 100 bed facility for highly contagious diseases was designed by architect James Renwick, Jr. (who also designed St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan) and opened in 1856. It was emptied of patients in 1886 and used as a nurses home until abandoned in the early 1950's.
